Reishi’s association with rest is not simply a modern marketing invention. Traditionally known as the “mushroom of immortality,” it was prized for its supposed effects on longevity and general well-being. More recently, attention has narrowed to its potential to calm the mind and support more restful sleep.
Personal experiences are one thing. What does the research show?
The answer is promising but far from settled. Most studies of Reishi and sleep have involved animals, although a recent human trial provides some encouraging clinical evidence. Below, we examine what researchers found and what it means for anyone considering a Reishi tincture.
Does Reishi Mushroom Tincture Actually Help You Sleep?

What Human Research Has Found
Human research on Reishi focusing on sleep has been largely lacking. Trials have looked at lipid levels, depression and anxiety, and even anticancer properties.
That was until now.
A 2026 paper of 218 adults with chronic insomnia randomized patients to either melatonin 5 mg nightly or Reishi mushroom extract. After 8 weeks, both groups saw significant improvements in insomnia. Perhaps most impressively, the Reishi group experienced greater improvement than melatonin alone.
At the time of writing, only the conference abstract has been released, not a full published paper. So we don’t know how the trial was set up or about any potential issues.
It does concur with an earlier 2005 trial, however, which found that a polysaccharide extract of Reishi improved fatigue compared to a placebo.
What Animal Studies Suggest
Animals didn’t just look at whether Reishi promoted sleep, but the underlying mechanism.
- Reishi extract helped rodents fall asleep faster and sleep for longer. The effect appeared partly related to GABA signalling, although the extract did not alter normal sleep at the doses tested.
- An alcohol-derived Reishi extract also reduced sleep latency and increased sleep duration in mice. The results pointed to a possible role for serotonin and changes in the gut microbiome.
- The extraction method may influence Reishi's effects on sleep. Water, ethanol, and polysaccharide extracts all enhanced drug-induced sleep in mice, although ethanol produced the strongest overall effect and none directly induced sleep.
Animal evidence is reasonably conclusive: Reishi can reliably induce sleep. That said, a mouse trial doesn’t directly establish effectiveness, dosage, or onset in humans.
How Might Reishi Support Sleep?

So, what’s going on? Why could Reishi help us fall asleep faster? It all comes down to neurotransmitters.
GABA is the brain’s main inhibitory signal. It’s the same neurotransmitter influenced by alcohol and benzodiazepines. By altering GABA signalling, it could help the brain unwind, slow down, and go to sleep.
Serotonin is another contender. The 2021 mouse study found increased serotonin in areas of the brain related to sleep.
Is Reishi a Sedative?
Reishi is not a sedative. Conventional sedatives induce a state of drowsiness, almost forcing the brain into a sleep-like state. Reishi, by contrast, appears to influence pathways involved in relaxation or sleep regulation rather than producing an immediate "knockout" effect.
People can respond differently, so first-time users should assess how it affects them before driving or performing safety-critical work.
Is a Reishi Tincture Better Than Capsules or Powder?

There are currently no human trials comparing different preparations of Reishi. However, logic dictates that if certain compounds within Reishi help people go to sleep, a greater concentration of those compounds will have a more potent effect.
Tinctures are generally much stronger than capsules or powders. A tincture is made via dual extraction:
- Water extraction concentrates water-soluble compounds such as polysaccharides.
- Alcohol extraction is commonly used for less water-soluble compounds, including many triterpenes.
This distills the compounds found in the powder or capsule into a much higher concentration. Plus, it's easier to add to food or drinks, making it part of your evening routine.

When Should You Take Reishi for Sleep?
Evening or before bed is the most sensible time if you’re hoping to wind down. Around 30 minutes before bed is generally best, depending on what you’ve eaten. However, a consistent wind-down routine makes more sense than the exact timing.
How Long Does Reishi Take to Work?
All Reishi trials assessed the effects of Reishi after several weeks of consistent use. While there are anecdotal reports that Reishi can work instantly, the effects can differ from person to person.
How Much Reishi Should You Take?

Is Reishi Mushroom Tincture Safe?
Reishi mushroom tinctures are generally considered safe. Possible side effects include digestive discomfort, dry mouth, dizziness, headache, rash, and, occasionally, insomnia.
The 2026 human trial observed no severe adverse events. However, if you have a mushroom allergy, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or currently take medication, it's best to speak to your doctor before taking Reishi.
So Is Reishi the Best Mushroom for Sleep?
The research seems to say so. Reishi is the functional mushroom most strongly associated with sleep. While the evidence remains limited, early findings suggest Reishi can help people unwind and support more restful sleep when used consistently.
