Double Extraction Mushroom Tinctures: A Simple Guide to Dual Extraction Mushrooms

Humans have brewed mushroom teas for thousands of years. Soaking the mushrooms in boiling water or gently simmering them is a way to “extract” the beneficial compounds inside. Just eating the raw or cooked mushrooms might be delicious (or not), but it doesn’t always yield the best results.

Double extraction (or dual extraction) is a technique for accessing all the “good stuff” locked up inside the mushroom. It’s often confusing to people who are new to functional mushrooms. Lots of terms get thrown around, such as non-alcohol extraction, single extraction, and dual extraction.

Below, we’re clearing up the confusion, explaining what double extraction means, how it works, why it matters for potency, and which mushrooms benefit most.

What is a Double Extraction Mushroom Tincture?

Double extraction mushroom tinctures are simply a liquid or powder made in a two-part process from functional mushrooms. That’s the double bit. There’s no difference between double and dual extraction. So, if you see the terms used in different contexts, they mean the same thing.

The big question is why extraction is needed.

Mushroom cell walls are composed of chitin. It’s the compound found in the hard shells of lobsters, crabs, and insects. If eaten raw or cooked, our bodies cannot digest chitin — they lack the enzyme chitinase.

Mushroom teas were a way to break down this chitin wall and extract the compounds locked inside the cells. But water alone misses key compounds. Only through both a water and alcohol step can you get a broader chemical profile and better absorption.

Why Do Mushrooms Need Dual Extraction?

Ever tried mixing oil and water? It doesn’t work. Oil is naturally hydrophobic: it repels water. The same is true for some of the beneficial compounds found in functional mushrooms.

Most extracts undergo water extraction through boiling. This pulls out the beta-glucans and polysaccharides, which activate and balance your immune system, reduce inflammation, and support overall wellbeing.

But if the process stops there, triterpenes, sterols, and other fat-soluble compounds are left behind. It takes alcohol extraction to unlock the full potential of each mushroom.

Think of it like making a tea and an infusion separately, then combining.

How the Double Extraction Process Works (Step-by-Step)

Step 1. Hot Water Extraction

Hot water extraction is the technical term for “making a tea.” The mushrooms are often cut up or ground up to increase the surface area. They’re simmered in hot water. The temperature, pressure, and time are carefully controlled to standardise the process.

Some mushrooms contain compounds that are heat-sensitive or degrade if processed incorrectly, so high temperatures and long extraction times must be controlled. High pressure also raises the boiling point, meaning you can extract at temperatures above 100°C, breaking apart the tough mushroom structure.

Step 2. Alcohol Extraction

The next step involves soaking the remaining mushroom solids in ethanol. This draws out the triterpenes and other alcohol-soluble compounds.

Soaking is a long process. At a minimum, it takes around 24-72 hours. However, some producers extend it to 1-2 weeks for mushrooms rich in triterpenes, as these compounds take longer to dissolve. This step is crucial for mushrooms like reishi or chaga, which are high in triterpenes. Hot water extraction alone leaves behind the most valuable compounds.

Generally, different mushrooms have different extraction times. Each manufacturer also has a slightly different process, depending on their experience.

Step 3. Combining the Extracts

Once completed, the two extracts are blended into one tincture. This creates a more complex extract. The alcohol might then be simmered off. The final tincture is either bottled as a liquid or dried into a powder.

What Does Double Extraction Change in the Final Product?

You might wonder if all this simmering and soaking is worth it. Does it actually result in a quantifiably different product at the end?

The answer is yes.

A double extraction mushroom tincture is a lot different compared to a standard mushroom tea or just eating them raw or cooked. Here’s how:

  • Higher potency — you get a stronger extract because more of the mushroom’s active compounds are actually pulled out.
  • Better bioavailability — your body can absorb and use those compounds more easily.
  • A more complete chemical profile — combining water and alcohol extractions captures compounds that would otherwise be missed.
  • Stronger benefits — depending on the mushroom, this can mean better antioxidant activity, immune support, or adaptogenic effects.

Non-extracted mushroom powders and teas are always weaker by comparison. But it is also worth noting which part of the mushroom underwent dual extraction. Ideally, you want a “fruiting body” extract rather than mycelium. The fruiting body (or mushroom) is where the highest concentration of beneficial compounds is found.

Which Mushrooms Benefit Most From Dual Extraction?

Functional mushrooms aren’t all the same. In fact, there are substantial differences between species, meaning the beneficial compounds can be night and day. That has implications for extraction.

The mushrooms which most benefit from dual extraction include:

  • Lion’s mane — a mix of hericenones and beta-glucans means it benefits from both alcohol and water extraction.
  • Reishi — packed with triterpenes that only come out properly with alcohol extraction.
  • Chaga — rich in antioxidants and betulinic compounds that need a combination of methods to extract well.
  • Cordyceps — its key compounds vary by species, so dual extraction helps ensure you’re getting the full range of benefits.

Are Double-Extracted Mushroom Tinctures Worth It?

In short, yes.

Anything less than double extraction means you’re leaving beneficial compounds behind. If you want the full effect, dual extraction is the only option.

But you don’t want any random dual extraction. The best results come from 100% fruiting bodies, not grown on grain, third-party testing, transparent sourcing, and no fillers.

Lucetic prides itself on ticking all these boxes. Our double-extraction mushroom tincture uses fruiting bodies grown right here in the USA. They’re not grain-based or GMO. All products undergo third-party testing, and there are no fillers — except a little apple cider vinegar and wildflower honey for taste.
