The term "adaptogen" refers to a category of natural compounds studied for their ability to support the body's management of non-specific stress. Research suggests they work primarily by interacting with the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis.

Adaptogenic compounds like the triterpenes found in Reishi have been studied as bidirectional modulators. When the HPA axis is overactive, they may support a balanced stress response. When the system is under demand, they may support resilience. This bidirectional quality is what makes them distinct from stimulants.

To access these specific mechanisms, the rigid chitin cell walls of the fungi must be biochemically dissolved through sustained hot water and alcohol extraction.
